In today's hurried and often frenzied world, trust and reliability are important, as is longevity - especially when it comes to the businesses families count on for the things they value most, like healthy, beautiful smiles. Bivins Orthodontics, the office of Dr. W. Todd Bivins, has been a highly-regarded orthodontic practice in Great Bridge for over two decades.

"I like having my one location in an area that values well-established businesses," Dr. Bivins says. "My patients know they can usually get in to see me on short notice or even by walking in. They won't have to wait weeks for an appointment, and they know we stay on the cutting edge of our field with continuing education and the latest advances in techniques and technology. They know we value each patient as a unique individual with their own set of needs requiring personalized treatment, which we deliver."

Having been a hometown orthodontist for 20 years means that Dr. Bivins is now starting to treat the children of his former patients.

"I have always loved what I do, but now that I am a father, it means a lot to me to be trusted with the orthodontic needs of people's children," he remarks. Many local dentists also trust Dr. Bivins with their children's orthodontic needs, and Bivins Orthodontics has been voted Best of Chesapeake for 12 years running.

Being an orthodontist wasn't always the plan for Dr. Bivins. After high school in Richmond, he applied to Virginia Commonwealth University and was accepted, and began a physical education track. Soon, though, he realized he wasn't in the right major.

"I met with the head of the Health and Physical Education Department and told him this was not the career path for me," Dr. Bivins says. "But my science classes had really peaked my interest, so I decided to major in biology."

"We have been

for 12 years. Both of my sons were
patients of Dr. Bivins. He is such a professional
and his staff is so friendly. It is so easy to make
appointments and get in for emergencies."

Onto organic chemistry, physics, and the like - Dr. Bivins took 22 to 24 hours of classes each semester and attended summer school and semester intercessions. He also spoke to a family friend who happened to be a dentist. "Dr. Jerry Suyes encouraged me to go to dental school," he says. That's just what he did. Dr. Bivins graduated from VCU at the end of his junior year with an early acceptance to dental school.

Dr. Bivins earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree with honors from the Medical College of Virginia, and then received a Master's degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from the University of Detroit Mercy. "I can't imagine doing anything else," he acknowledges. "I love what I do. I'm still best friends with the people I went to dental school with."

According to the American Association of Orthodontics, an initial orthodontic evaluation should take place no later than the age of seven. It's also important to recognize that early evaluation isn't necessarily followed by early treatment. Treatment for common orthodontic problems typically begins around the ages of 9 to 14, when most of the baby teeth are gone and many of the permanent ones are in place.

According to Dr. Bivins, the summer months are a good time for children and teenagers to start their orthodontic treatment. "Kids today are under so much pressure during the school year," he notes. "Treatment is easier for everyone if parents make a series of appointments during summer vacation."

"We have been going to Bivins Orthodontics for 12 years," Chesapeake resident Kathleen Kling says. "Both of my sons were patients of Dr. Bivins. He is such a professional and his staff is so friendly. It is so easy to make appointments and get in for emergencies."

According to Chesapeake's Jennifer Tolarchyk, parent to triplets, "All three of my kids needed braces at the same time. I was so grateful that Bivins Orthodontics offered a family discount, and was especially thrilled at how accommodating Dr. Todd and his team were with our busy schedule. He always saw us right away with no waiting."
