Back in 1997, when Dr. Todd Bivins and Dr. Carl Roy first crossed paths, they had no idea they would once again partner almost 24 years later.  But that’s exactly what’s happening as they join forces to continue providing the Chesapeake and Virginia Beach communities with the very best in orthodontics for years to come.

Beginning in June of this year, Bivins Orthodontics will merge with Roy Orthodontics Chesapeake office, just three miles down the road. This partnership will increase convenience and access for patients by offering more appointment flexibility and availability. The two offices will share resources and be able to offer appointments Monday through Friday. But rest assured, patients will receive the same excellent care and customer service they are used to, in an environment they know and trust.

For Dr. Bivins and Dr. Roy, this is a pinnacle point in their journey that started many years ago with a couple of firsts for the pair. Dr. Bivins was Dr. Roy’s first associate to join his Roy Orthodontics practice. Their original meeting was a result of their desire to provide superior patient care, powerful networking opportunities, and a little luck.
Dr. Bivins was studying orthodontics in Michigan when he was fortunate enough to have the world-renowned orthodontist, Dr. Ron Roth, as one of his professors. He felt an immediate connection with Roth’s goal-based approach to orthodontics and knew he’d found his north star in treatment philosophy. Unbeknownst to Dr. Bivins, Dr. Roy had also been a student of Roth’s and greatly impacted by his revolutionary method of prioritizing orthodontic goals for healthier treatment outcomes.

Dr. Roy, a Tidewater native, initially started practicing restorative dentistry. After attending courses on occlusion taught by Dr. Peter Dawson, he realized his true calling was in Orthodontics. But he wasn’t satisfied with the typical treatment of just aligning teeth. He was committed to providing true health care that included treatment goals for stable jaw joints, healthy gum and bone, a well-functioning, stable bite, optimal dental and facial aesthetics, as well as airway. These are the same goals that guide the best restorative dentists. He found such training by attending the two-year program taught by Dr. Ron Roth and his teaching partner, Dr. Bob Williams. After completing his training with Roth/Williams, he was armed to bring this unique treatment style to the Tidewater area.

But Dr. Roy gained more than just treatment knowledge through Roth’s and Williams’s training. He gained two mentors, lifelong influences and great friends. Dr. Roy was often asked to present cases and then to become a faculty member of the Roth/Williams Center for Functional Occlusion.
“It was my greatest honor in orthodontics to be invited to join a group of the best clinical orthodontists literally in the world, teaching all over the world,” Dr. Roy says. “I wouldn’t be practicing as I do today if it weren’t for those two advocates for the highest quality of care in the profession.”

“Dr. Roy has been
a friend and mentor of mine
throughout my entire career.
For our practices to be merging
at this time seems like the ideal conclusion to a journey
 that we started nearly a
quarter of a century ago.”

Roth is also responsible for originally introducing the two doctors. After bringing their families together to meet for dinner in Chesapeake, Dr. Bivins knew he’d found not only a great practice to join but also a lifelong mentor.

“It is an absolute honor to see my career come full circle in this way,” Dr. Bivins says. “Dr. Roy has been a friend and mentor of mine throughout my entire career. For our practices to be merging at this time seems like the ideal conclusion to a journey that we started nearly a quarter of a century ago.”

And Dr. Roy knew he’d found a great associate and a lifelong colleague in the orthodontic field. “Dr. Bivins is a highly talented clinician with a special artistic eye,” he says. “Given that orthodontics is both science and art, Todd’s gifts are incredibly valuable, and I look forward to our collaboration.”

Although Dr. Bivins had always assumed that he’d go practice in his hometown of Richmond after residency, the draw of being able to work under the guidance of Roy, a respected leader in the field, was too much to resist. Dr. Bivins moved back to the Chesapeake area to begin practicing with Dr. Roy. The two doctors were eager to learn from each other and provide best-in-class orthodontic care to their patients.

“Dr. Bivins is a highly
talented clinician
with a special artistic eye.
Given that orthodontics is
both science and art,
Todd’s gifts are incredibly valuable,
and I look forward to our collaboration.”

After honing his skills and soaking up the mentorship opportunities from Dr. Roy, Dr. Bivins decided to venture out on his own in 2003 to open Bivins Orthodontics in Chesapeake. With a new practice and young family, Dr. Bivins maintained his respectful relationship with Dr. Roy and often consulted him on cases and business decisions.

Over the years, both doctors built very successful practices and had considered taking on additional partners and associates, but never found the right fit or the right timing—until recently. As they reflect on the legacy and future growth of both practices, it seems natural that they come back full circle to where they started.

So now, 18 years later, these two colleagues and friends are once again joining forces. Thanks to their partnership, patients in the Chesapeake and Virginia Beach communities can look forward to many more years of orthodontic excellence.
