Dr. Geoff Campbell is a successful family doctor. He's also on a first name basis with the many thousands of patients he's cared for over the past quarter of a century. In fact, most of his patients only have a first name - like Dixie, Sparky, Teddy, or Fido. Dr. Campbell is one of Hampton Road's most successful and well-liked veterinarians and the founder of Edinburgh Animal Hospital in Chesapeake.

"If you're not an animal lover, it may be a little difficult to think of a veterinarian as a traditional family doctor," Dr. Campbell shares with a ready smile. "But I look upon my patients with the same caring attitude that we expect from our physicians."

Veterinarians are expected to possess expertise in many areas, and Dr. Campbell fills the bill. Edinburgh Animal Hospital offers a full regimen of small animal medical services, including preventive medicine, surgery, dentistry, radiology, in-house diagnostics and laboratory, pharmacy, vaccinations, parasite prevention and control, orthopedics, and reproductive medicine.

"I have to have a certain amount of expertise in all of these disciplines to give my patients top-notch diagnoses and treatment," Dr. Campbell explains. "Veterinary medicine is one of the few medical practices where the patients are unable to verbalize their problems. Having a broad background in many areas always helps me make an accurate and comprehensive diagnosis - and also allows me to develop an effective treatment plan."

Pet owners Katie Stevens and Tommy Hageman trust Dr. Campbell with the care and well-being of their beloved cats, Albert and Clark. Albert is a 15-year-old Silver Persian and Clark is an 11-year-old Blue Point Himalayan.

"Edinburgh Hospital is so clean and cheerful," Tommy says. "The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable. Both Albert and Clark are getting on in years and need special attention, and Dr. Campbell has earned our trust."

Katie adds: "We know they are in good hands here. And it's also in a very convenient location for us."

Dr. Campbell has seen many changes in the field of veterinary medicine. "Pet owners and animal lovers now demand a comprehensive approach to the care and well-being of their beloved companions," he says. "My staff and I stay on the cutting edge of treatment. Today, I'm happy to say we can treat and cure many pets who would have been euthanized just a few years ago. There is also an emphasis today on preventive health care for pets. There's even an emerging health insurance industry for pets. My staff works with all forms of insurance, including Trupanion
