MIDGETTE FAMILY DENTISTRY
Long-term relationships create an atmosphere of family among patients and pros
by John Downs, Sr.
Dr. Brian Midgette
Midgette Family Dentistry is one of the area's most successful dental practices. With state-of-the-art equipment, a convenient location, and a professional, friendly staff, it's obvious why thousands of patients throughout Hampton Roads have made Dr. Brian Midgette their regular family dentist. But Dr. Midgette feels there is another important reason his dental practice has grown and prospered over the past 29 years.
"Loyalty," he explains. "I definitely feel I have the most loyal patients imaginable. Many have been with me since I first started nearly three decades ago. We are now treating second and third generations. A large number of my new patients come to us because they have been recommended by people I've been treating for years. When your patients say so many nice things about you, you know you're doing something right."
And as with his patients, there is also a great deal of loyalty among Dr. Midgette's professional staff.
Midgette Family Dentistry provides full service general dentistry and is centrally located
"Some of them have been with me for more than 20 years," he says. "In fact, several members of my team started out here as patients. With long term relationships like that, people really get to know each other. It's a genuine family atmosphere here."
Midgette Family Dentistry provides full service general dentistry. It is centrally located and convenient to Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Suffolk. The beautifully designed, stand-alone building on Taylor Road is only minutes away from I-664 and I-64.
It was no accident that Dr. Midgette chose the Western Branch area for his dental practice. "I'm a lifelong resident of the area and a proud graduate of Western Branch High School," he says. "Many of my patients are old friends, acquaintances, and neighbors. I couldn't be happier having my dental practice in my hometown. It's a dream come true for me."
Dr. Midgette knew at a very early age that dentistry was his calling. While attending Western Branch High School and Old Dominion University, he worked part-time in a local orthodontic laboratory. "My work experience and the mentorship of a number of fine dentists reinforced my desire to enter the field of dentistry," he says.
Dr. Midgette graduated with honors from ODU with a degree in biology. His hard work, life experience, and dedication earned him early admission to the prestigious Medical College of Virginia's School of Dentistry. Again his hard work and skill in dental school resulted in a dental degree with honors.
In addition to receiving the finest education possible, Dr. Midgette also met his future wife, Lisa, while in dental school. The two married in 1986 and are the proud parents of two daughters, Channing and Chelsea.
Dr. Midgette and Lisa are dedicated to giving back to the community they love. They strongly support the H.E.R. Shelter program, and regularly deliver meals at Christmas to the less fortunate. Through the Mission of Mercy, Midgette Family Dentistry provides dental services to the indigent. Dr. Midgette also promotes the field of dentistry to young people through school visits, speeches, and mentoring.
Midgette Family Dentistry is a comprehensive practice that offers patients a full array of dental services and procedures. Dr. Midgette starts the doctor-patient relationship with a thorough interview. He goes over medical history, talks with each patient at length, and prepares them for a thorough oral exam. In addition to gum and dental health concerns, Dr. Midgette and his staff test patients for other conditions, including a vital cancer screening. Many types of oral cancer can be detected during an exam of this type.
"It can be a life-saving procedure," Dr. Midgette says. "We insist that each new patient undergo this important screening for early detection."
Dr. Midgette is one of the few local dentists specifically trained in the treatment of sleep disordered breathing (apnea)
Betty Burnell is a retired government worker and is presently Minister of Music at Westhaven Baptist Church. "I've been a patient of Dr. Midgette's for more than 15 years," she says. "Everyone in the office is so congenial and helpful. My mother, Mary, who is 95 years old, is also a patient. I am constantly amazed at how kind and gentle they always are with my mother. They go out of their way to say such wonderful things to her and to really boost her spirits. Dr. Midgette and all his team are just the best. I always recommend them to my friends and relatives."
Patients at Midgette Family Dentistry benefit from the advanced dental equipment Dr. Midgette utilizes.
"One of the most cutting-edge procedures we perform is called Cone Beam Computerized Topography," Dr. Midgette explains. "This machine replaces the older technology used to x-ray gums and teeth. It generates much less radiation and gives me an extraordinarily clear and detailed picture of the patient's mouth. Additionally, the images are in 3-D, allowing me to make assessments from many different angles. This gives me and my staff the ability to do much more accurate work."
Among the many services and procedures offered at Midgette Family Dentistry are whitening, veneers, cosmetic fillings, root canal therapy, extractions, Periodontics, crowns and bridges, specialty dentures, and cosmetic dentistry.
Dr. Midgette is one of the few local dentists specifically trained in the treatment of sleep disordered breathing, or apnea. In select cases, Dr. Midgette can treat patients with a custom-made dental appliance, which can greatly aid in relieving the symptoms of sleep apnea. It can replace the bulky CPAP equipment many sufferers now have to wear at night.
