Seasons come and go. As fond memories of the festive Christmas season are left behind until next year, many people shift gears to prepare for the much-dreaded and definitely less-festive “Tax Season.” As this often-stressful season looms with brand new tax laws for 2018 returns, Ameena Lewis, president and owner of Lewis Accounting and Tax Service, is more than prepared for assisting people with questions and preparation of their tax returns.

Located in the heart of Great Bridge, Lewis Accounting has been helping small businesses and individuals with their tax, bookkeeping, and accounting needs for nearly 15 years. This year, Ameena expects to see a rise in clients coming in for tax help due to the new tax laws.

“There are a lot of new changes in tax laws and the way we file this year,” Ameena explains. “They’ve changed the whole format of the 1040. It’s now a postcard with six other schedules, in addition to all of the standard familiar schedules. They’ve made the new tax laws and filing changes sound a bit more simplistic than they actually are, and they could be a bit challenging even for people who don’t itemize,” she concludes.

Filing and form differences are not the only changes that will impact people this tax season. The IRS has also changed tax brackets, lowered the tax liability, and increased the standard deduction. With all the new changes facing taxpayers this year, Ameena wants to assure clients old and new that Lewis Accounting stands ready to help.

“We are definitely prepared to assist clients with their 2018 taxes,” she says with confidence. “We’ve studied extensively all the new changes, and we want people to know that we’re here and we’re ready.” For those who attempt to complete their own tax returns but find it too complicated, Ameena is ever-accommodating. “If they start their returns and find it more complicated than they thought, they can just come in and see us,” she says with a smile. “We’re happy to help!”

It’s that willingness to help that permeates the atmosphere at Lewis Accounting. From the first cheerful greeting of the receptionist, the tone is set for friendly and helpful customer service. Even the office waiting area gets in on the act. Comfortable and inviting, in calming shades of sand and blue, it is a reflection of Ameena and her staff – professional yet remaining friendly, at ease, and down to earth. These qualities are the cornerstone of Lewis Accounting’s principles.

“My dad had his own accounting business when I was growing up, and he instilled in me business principles of customer service. They have never changed from the time I worked with him over 20 years ago. Our focus here is personalized, kind, and friendly service,” Ameena states with conviction. “I believe it’s imperative to treat customers with respect and kindness. In fact, when I hire someone, I expect that they will treat our clients kindly. I don’t accept anything other than that,” she adds matter-of-factly.

It’s the individualized personal service that draws clients to Lewis Accounting. “We adapt to our clients’ individual needs, which cookie-cutter companies aren’t able to do,” Ameena explains. “We provide direction to enable clients to be in a better position tax-wise for future years. We don’t treat our clients like numbers. They return year after year and become like family. In fact, I’m doing taxes for some of my clients’ children who are now old enough to file taxes!” she enthuses. “It’s really exciting!”

The clients aren’t the only people who are like family at Lewis Accounting. The staff, though a well-oiled machine, is a small happy family in itself. Smiles and laughter are abundant in the office. “We work so well together and we love each other here,” Ameena says smiling. “It really is a joy and a privilege to be able to work with so many outstanding people. We really are like a family.”

As in any family, communication is key. For Lewis Accounting’s “customer family,” Ameena and her staff are always mindful to make sure that they respond to every customer inquiry. “It can be frustrating for people when multiple phone calls, emails, or texts go unanswered,” she says. “I find that unacceptable. Taxes and finances can be stressful, but they’re not something you want to ignore. So here, we return every client communication as soon as possible. If we don’t have the answer for them at that moment, we’ll research it to get them what they need. It’s just part of respecting the clients and their time.”

To further help her clients, Ameena has studied to add additional credentials to her degree in accounting and her 20 years of experience. “This month my associate tax preparer, Danielle, and I finish our courses to become Enrolled Agents,” she says excitedly. Enrolled Agent status—the highest credential awarded by the IRS—allows agents to represent taxpayers before the IRS in the event of audits, examination, collections, and appeals. “Also, our office manager and tax preparer, Michelle, is working towards getting her EA credential,” Ameena adds.

“We’re very excited about earning these new credentials,” Ameena says happily. “It’s an extra service that we can provide our clients that will help to give them peace of mind. No one likes getting ‘that letter’ from the IRS. With Enrolled Agent status, we can help ease some of that stress for clients by being able to represent them should the need arise.”

Providing friendly, helpful services to the community, locally owned and family operated Lewis Accounting and Tax Service is a business that harkens back to the bygone businesses of yesteryear, where a helping hand is always ready and clients and co-workers are treated like family. Although seasons and tax laws change, the focus at Lewis Accounting and Tax Service always remains the same: friendly, professional, personalized service.
