When it comes to health and fitness, Rob and Kelly Killen don’t put much stock in New Year resolutions, which they consider too short-sighted.

“At New Year, people think of starting and finishing something,” Kelly says. “Instead they should think of fitness and health as a life-long journey. There isn’t a finish line. Once they reach their goal, their behavior shouldn’t change the next day.”

Rob agrees. “Don’t approach fitness as working to achieve a short-term goal. Instead, approach it as adopting a new lifestyle.”

This husband and wife duo have successfully put their philosophy regarding fitness and nutrition to work in Great Bridge, operating two businesses side by side: Orangetheory Fitness Center and KK Wellness Consulting. As a result, lives have been changed.

“I use to think that my best physical days were behind me,” Charlie Pugh testifies. “Orangetheory Fitness Chesapeake made me realize that my best days were actually still ahead of me, and then combining it with the proper nutrition coaching from KK Wellness, I have unlocked potential in me I never knew existed. The only regret I have is not doing it sooner. I am in better shape physically and mentally as a 44-year-old man than I have ever been in my entire life.”

“Our clients train in five heart rate zones and the goal for each class participant is to spend 12 to 20 minutes in zones 4 and 5 combined, which are the Orange and Red Zones,” Rob explains.“The Orange Zone, 84 to 91 per cent of your maximum heart rate, is where the magic happens and members who exercise in these ranges are able to continue burning calories up to 36 hours after their hour-long workout. Everyone working out here wears a heart monitor throughout their class. With this constant monitoring our coaches can ensure that each individual is getting the most effective workout for them personally—regardless of their fitness level. At our Great Bridge studio, we’ve had people who have never before exercised in their life lose 50 to 100 pounds, as well as marathon runners who’ve shaved minutes off their time using only our workouts.”

“Orangetheory workouts are much more economical and convenient than exercising with a personal trainer each month,” Rob continues. “Our studio is open every day of the year (except Christmas Day) with almost 50 classes each week, beginning at 5 a.m. on weekdays, and 7 a.m. on weekends. Orangetheory members have the convenience to schedule their own classes at any of the 1,100 plus studio locations across the country. The coach-led group workouts help tremendously with accountability, proper form, safety, and motivation.”

Kelly agrees that coaching and accountability are proven keys to success. She employs both at KK Wellnes—a nutrition-based program that uses cognitive behavioral therapy to help clients achieve lasting weight loss. “At KK Wellness, not only do we have assessment meetings, but we also have remote coaching and we maintain daily contact with our clients,” she says. “This allows coaching to occur even during holidays or while traveling.”

Jennifer Tolarchyk is one of Kelly’s newest clients. Knowing that Jennifer would be attending holiday events during which she would easily fall into old eating patterns, Kelly sent her encouraging texts daily that helped her avoid pitfalls.

Kelly explains, “but 80 percent of maintaining good health comes from proper nutrition. Additionally, roughly 80 percent of the food on shelves of supermarkets today didn’t even exist 100 years ago.”

Through a five-stage program, Kelly and her staff guide their clients through examinations of their thoughts and actions regarding food, the objective being to establish a new lifestyle that results in permanent weight-loss.

“We are here to help those interested in more than just a quick fix,” Kelly maintains. “When people have graduated, they understand how to make a meal plan for a week. They’ve been taught—not told—how to eat. They no longer think in terms of what they can’t eat, but in terms of what they won’t eat. They are empowered. Regardless of where they are, they know how to approach food.”

“Few people realize that they don’t have to order from the menu when eating out,” Kelly continues. “Most restaurants have a lean protein and a complex carb that they’ll prepare for you. I tell clients, ‘Don’t open the menu. Be the first at your table to order, and order the food you know you should eat. Then hand back your unopened menu and watch the social impact it has on everyone else. You’ll leave the restaurant completely satiated, feeling like a rock star.’”

Kelly knows all about that Rockstar feeling since she follows the same lifestyle she teaches to her clients. “If I’m not walking the walk, I certainly can’t teach others to walk it,” she insists. “There are so many benefits to this lifestyle. Recently, I underwent surgery and my doctors said, ‘You healed like a child.’ All the food I’ve been eating made the difference.”
