BIVINS ORTHODONTICS

Dr. Todd Bivins brings an artist’s eye to the practice of orthodontics

Dr. Todd Bivins could be considered something of a Renaissance man. Besides being a helicopter pilot, he is also an accomplished artist who has won awards in multiple art shows and whose works have been displayed in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Patients sitting in the waiting room of his Mount Pleasant Road office might be unaware that the striking paintings adorning the walls are his creations. Relying on his artistic eye, Dr. Bivins uses acrylics to transform images of commonplace items—a spilled glass of ice, the revolving doors of a bank—into glistening works of art.

However, despite his love of painting and the allure of piloting, Dr. Bivins’s real love is being an orthodontist. “I can’t imagine doing anything else,” he confesses with a smile. “This career checks all of my boxes. I’m a Type A personality: I like to see a case through from start to finish, being involved in the process every step of the way.”

Driven and detail-oriented, Dr. Bivins is nevertheless sensitive to the expectations of his patients.

“When it comes to orthodontics, people are looking for an office that’s conveniently located, where visits can be kept shorter and to a minimum,” he says. “And people want a staff of trusted professionals who treat them with kindness. We keep our focus on the quality of care that we give our patients—not the quantity.”

New patients are sometimes surprised to learn that treatments need not begin immediately. “The best time to begin orthodontic treatment isn’t necessarily whenever you happen to be sitting in an orthodontist office for the first time,” Dr. Bivins explains. “Often we need to allow more time for the patient to grow or for the teeth to develop to the point where orthodontics can be done as efficiently as possible.”

Both the American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontics recommend that an initial orthodontic evaluation should take place no later than the age of seven. Although for some patients early treatment may be necessary, treatment for common orthodontic problems typically begins between the ages of nine to 14, when most of the baby teeth are gone and many of the permanent ones are in place.  Early advanced planning can often result in a child having their braces off by the time they enter high school.

The same keen eye that guides Dr. Bivins’s decisions when creating a new painting also guides his treatment recommendations for his patients. He offers a wide variety of options, including clear aligners, braces or a combination of both if that’s the best alternative.

Bivins Orthodontics is one of the only orthodontic offices in Virginia to use the iTero Scanner Element 2. The device not only eliminates the need for dental impressions, but it can also show patients in real time what their teeth will look like after orthodontic treatment.

“During our new patient exam, people often ask if we ‘do Invisalign,’” Dr. Bivins reveals. “Of course, the short answer is yes, but in reality, we ‘do Invisalign’ in the way that an elite level athlete ‘does Nike or Adidas.’ Invisalign is a brand name—an alternative to conventional braces that we have proudly offered since it was introduced to our area in 1999.”

As one of the first doctors in Virginia to implement Invisalign treatment, Dr. Bivins’ experience with this product is unrivaled. “But it’s important to know that there are not only other conventional braces options available to patients, but other clear aligner choices as well,” he adds.

While Invisalign is the oldest and most recognizable name in clear aligners, other newer and less expensive options include Clear Correct Aligners and Clarity Aligners from 3M. Because of their vast experience in aligner therapy, 3M chose Bivins Orthodontics to be the only orthodontist in Tidewater, the Peninsula or Richmond to debut their new system of Clarity Aligners.

Dr. Bivins also prides himself on keeping up with the latest technology. He and his staff are very excited to be using the iTero Scanner Element 2. This new technology allows the Bivins team to create a full arch scan of a patient’s mouth in as little as two to three minutes versus fifteen minutes or longer for older scannersThe technology also allows Dr. Bivins to present visuals to a patient that show the possible outcome of proposed treatments.

Just as Dr. Bivins draws from his experience as an artist when creating a new work, so too, he draws from his extensive training and experience in dentistry when determining how to create a beautiful smile.

That experience includes graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University at the end of his junior year because of an early acceptance into dental school. After earning his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree with honors from the Medical College of Virginia, he went on to earn a Master’s degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from the University of Detroit Mercy. Finishing his dental residency in Detroit, this detail-oriented dentist moved to Chesapeake, where he quickly earned the respect of patients from across the region: Dr. Bivins is a 14-year winner of Chesapeake’s Best Orthodontist Award.

With over 20 years of experience as a Board Certified Orthodontist, Dr. Bivins has lectured on Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics in Australia, China, France and, of course, the U.S. “We use this experience for the benefit of our patients,” he explains. “We offer a straight forward and honest approach when recommending treatments to patients.”

Even though he stays on the cutting edge technologically, Dr. Bivins considers his experienced staff to be his greatest asset. With skill and compassion, they work side by side with him as a team, the result being less chair time for patients and more effective procedures. The admiration is mutual. Judy Elder, who has worked as Dr. Bivins’s public relations manager  for over 18 years, says, “I feel lucky to work here with such a great boss and person.”

With the sensitivity of an artist, Dr. Bivins believes his practice’s many years of success is due to a very simple philosophy: “If we take care of our patients in a respectable and ethical way, then everything else falls into place.”
