When speaking with Beverly Jones, one gets the sense that the accounting professional is always thinking ahead and focusing on what’s best for her clients. “My job is to help clients reach their goals. That could be achieved by getting the biggest tax refund possible, or advising on how to successfully operate their business, how to invest for retirement, or other major life events. I really enjoy acting as a sounding board for their ideas and concerns,” Beverly says.

Beverly grew up in Virginia Beach and graduated from Kempsville High School. After graduation, she started working in administrative positions and doing accounting and bookkeeping for local small businesses. Beverly always knew she could do more, but quickly realized the opportunities she wanted required a college degree. She earned that degree by attending night classes at Old Dominion University while continuing to work full time.

Beverly started the business in Virginia Beach while married to her husband, Steve, and raising her daughter, Alexandra. The family moved to Chesapeake in 2005, and the business followed. The current office is in Chesapeake on Greenbrier Parkway, not far from Kempsville Road.

“I am thrilled with Beverly!
She has been our accountant for 20 years...
she really helped me transitioninto my new role.
Beverly coached me, encouraged me
and let me develop my own way of doing things.
She was always there to helpwith any question at all.”

Administrator Teresa Thompson is the first friendly face to greet anyone visiting the office. Accountant Tyler Vutiprichar can be seen going from Teresa to Beverly as they work together like a well-oiled machine. They feel that customer service is key, and they like to stay involved with their clients year round to maintain that personal touch.

“My clients are really good to work with and appreciate our help,” Beverly smiles. “They know that they will always be able to speak to a person who will know about their business and be able to answer any questions that come up.” These could be questions like can they afford to expand into the newly empty space next door, or hire another employee? Does their cash flow indicate growth or time for a more cautious approach?

Finding an accountant, especially a CPA, is one of the most important things a business owner can do to advance their enterprise. Even a small business of just one individual can benefit. Tax laws change every year, and expenses that were deductible last year may not be this year. Beverly recalls doing taxes for a sole proprietor one year. Various deductions and exemptions were correctly claimed that year with Beverly’s guidance. Then, for the next two years, the business owner did her taxes herself, following the same formula. However, some tax laws had changed, and she found herself being audited by the IRS. She returned to Beverly for help.

“It feels good to resolve an issue for someone,” Beverly affirms.

Some of Beverly’s clients have come to her with greater challenges. For a few, it had been years since they had filed all the necessary forms for their businesses, including tax returns. Beverly worked with her clients to get all the right forms filed. She represented them to the IRS and successfully negotiated payment plans, without ever having to go to court.

But Beverly provides much more than tax advice. “Of course we can save businesses money on their taxes, but we can also help them cut expenses elsewhere by talking about how their operation functions,” Beverly explains. That’s why working together all year long and developing a relationship is so important.

Bill Burnett, general manager of Gary Allen Hair and Spa in Virginia Beach, can attest to this. “I am thrilled with Beverly!” he enthuses. “She has been our accountant for 20 years, and when I was promoted to general manager in early 2017, she really helped me transition into my new role. I’d been with Gary Allen for 20 years but was not familiar with the accounting aspect of this next step in my career. Beverly coached me, encouraged me and let me develop my own way of doing things. She was always there to help with any question at all.”

Joann Daugherty, owner of Affordable Tents, has a great deal of admiration for Beverly, as well as trust. “I can’t say enough good things about her! I’ve owned my business for 30 years, and Beverly gives me peace of mind: she files forms on time, delivers paperwork to my office and makes it all run so smoothly that it feels effortless to me!” Joann describes. “I first started working with her a few years ago to straighten out an accounting mess my previous accountant had left me with. Beverly worked for hours and hours to get it all straight again. Beverly is wonderful!”

With tax season coming up, it’s worth noting that several changes in tax law have occurred this year.  Entertainment can no longer be deducted as a business expense, and the corporate tax rate has changed. Uses of 529 education savings accounts have been expanded to include private school for primary and secondary education in addition to college. Personal exemptions are no longer permitted, while the child tax credit has doubled and tax tables have been reformatted, putting some individuals in a lower tax bracket.

Although Beverly works hard, usually putting in a minimum of 10 hours on a normal day and much more than that during tax time, she also believes in balancing work with family. Her husband Steve is a graduate of William and Mary, and is a huge sports fan. “I take a few days off in March to go to basketball tournaments at William and Mary with Steve. We enjoy that time together,” she remarks.

Once a year, they also like to vacation in the Caribbean. They’ve been to St. Lucia, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos and Jamaica a few times. “We like to tour the islands and take in the culture there. And relaxing by the pool is great, too!” Beverly smiles. “I think of those tropical places on many chilly days!”

“I can help people make the most of their time and talents
by taking the accounting burden off their shoulders
and transferring it to mine.
Then, they can really focus on doing what they love.”

—Beverly Jones, CPA

Beverly and Steve share their home with 12-year-old peekapoo, Duchess. They are looking forward to daughter Alexandra’s graduation from ODU this year with a degree in biology, and then it’s on to nursing school.

Beverly and her team are more than happy to assist anyone, whether for their personal or business needs. She adds,“I can help people make the most of their time and talents by taking the accounting burden off their shoulders and transferring it to mine. Then, they can really focus on doing what they love.”
