During the most important times of our lives, we all want to wrap our loved ones in comfort and beauty. It can take the form of a hug, a warm blanket, the smell of fresh cookies hovering in the air, or soothing music that fills a room with peace.

When it comes to creating the right visual ambience, a well-designed floral arrangement can make a scene our loved ones will never forget.

Glenda Fowler has spent her whole life using floral and garden plant products to create that experience, expertly choosing the perfect shade of color and the right style of petal to express the emotion of a moment. Her shop, Lasting Impressions Flowers and Gifts, has stood by thousands of local families during the high of a wedding, the low of a funeral, the wonder of Christmas, and just about every special occasion in between.

“Floral arrangements have a special power to make a moment last forever.”

Her retail location in Chesapeake’s Great Bridge district feels like a memory box of the area’s most touching moments. Photos of real local brides, ecstatic with the look of their bouquet, line her shelves. Photo albums and thank-you notes from customers-turned-friends seem to be everywhere. As Glenda peruses her shop, she points to a few of her favorites, recalling the occasion as if she could see herself there all over again. “Floral arrangements,” she explains, “have a special power to make a moment last forever.”

And she wants everyone to know that they don’t need to wait for a wedding or other event to enjoy them.

Newlywed couples, eager to impress each other’s parents in their first holiday season together, can purchase a festive dining table centerpiece, probably for less than they spent on presents under the tree. Elderly parents who finally relented to an assisted living situation can smile once more at the sight of a potted fern to keep them company. For the far-flung sibling who has to eat Thanksgiving dinner alone, a few floral touches around the house can make them feel like part of the family again.

“There are many reasons why a client may want flower or plant arrangements,” Glenda notes. “Whatever their personality, family circumstance, or message, we can find a way to bring it to life.”

Although Lasting Impressions certainly offers conventional flowers in popular arrangements, the staff prides itself on highly customized arrangements using lesser-known products, which is how the shop is able to accommodate the pickiest bride or the most unique situation.

“I love all flowers, even the obscure ones,” Glenda says with a smile. “My designers on staff are never afraid of incorporating the unordinary.”

That love for flowers shaped Glenda’s life when she was a child in Chesapeake. She grew up around gardens, particularly of the floral variety, and spent countless days outside, hands in soil, whispering sweet nothings to a plant on the edge of life, then watching it burst with color once again.

It wasn’t long before a young Glenda started bringing them indoors. Soon her home resembled a flower garden surrounded by walls. There was never a question of what her career might be.

Fortunately for her, she also received guidance on the importance of smart business thinking. After high school, Glenda accepted a few day jobs while she earned a business degree and saved up for her dream. Husband Randy, a retired Marine, helped her raise two sons.

“We give each client the best.
Whether a small private wedding,
a family get-together for Christmas,
or a large corporate party,
everyone gets prompt,
professional service.
That’s kept my business going pretty well
for 27 years. It will never change.”

It started with Glenda selling floral arrangements out of her house. She committed herself to perfection in every detail: sharply trimmed stems, tightly wrapped ribbons, lush variety in each bouquet, and color balance driven by interior design. Trendy shades of turquoise, gray, or burgundy, perhaps less embraced by other florists, revealed their beauty under Glenda’s skilled touch.

“People started coming to me saying they recognized my work at an event. My designs really set me apart. That’s a great feeling,” she shares.

When a nearby retail location became available, Glenda took the plunge to become a full-fledged business owner. She strictly hired designers and assistants who shared her high standards. Her voracious willingness to invest in fresh flowers made her a favorite among growers. Soon, her shop became a go-to location for the freshest, cleanest, and most innovative products on the market.

More and more clients came along. Then community leaders. Then city officials. Then CBN.

Glenda is responsible for the magnificent Christmas trees at Founders’ Inn, and the displays for the 700 Club studio and offices. The CBN corporate support building is also beautified by Glenda’s special touch. “I enjoy those challenges,” she shares.

ll gets excited about local family weddings. Thanks to her abundant on-site supply of inventory, clients can visit for a consultation and then see a prototype of their vision right away. Want a quirky touch? Glenda has cotton buds she can weave into a rustic arrangement. Love grays and browns, but unsure how to make them pretty for a wedding or newborn celebration? Glenda is full of good ideas, and she’s happy to collaborate with event planners to bring it all together.

As she tours the shop to show some examples, a flower vendor arrives with fresh orchids. Glenda, always on the lookout for something pretty to admire, soon lines her shop with bright, tall, colorful orchids, shimmering in a display of sundry exotic patterns.

“When homeowners move past the lower quality plants at mainstream garden stores, they start coming to us for truly beautiful, and often more original, plants for their flower beds,” she explains. “We give them detailed instructions for care at home. Soon they have a vibrant and diverse flower garden that’s one of a kind.”

Although Glenda is sometimes still able to meet clients spontaneously at her shop, she’s working seven days a week, often traveling across the region for residential and business clients alike. She is already booking 2018 weddings. “We give each client the best,” she says plainly. “Whether a small private wedding, a family get-together for Christmas, or a large corporate party, everyone gets prompt, professional service. That’s kept my business going pretty well for 27 years. It will never change.”
