NATIONAL I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPY DAY

by Rob Lauer

National I Want You to be Happy Day on March 3 invites us to step into someone else's shoes, see life from their perspective, and then do something to make them happy. Putting a smile on someone else's face usually brings a smile to ours, too.

Genuine happiness takes effort, and it doesn't fit a mold. Everything from being a morning person or a night owl to having a favorite season and seafood can make or break a person's general idea of happiness. A person's overall journey through life gives them a unique outlook on happiness, too.

While we're not individually responsible for the happiness of others, we do play a role in setting the emotional temperature in whatever place we find ourselves. Ultimately, we can't control what others may feel, but what we do can make a situation more conducive to joy and good cheer.

So, on March 3, give a flower here. Tell a silly knock-knock joke there. Buy a coffee for the person standing in line behind you. Remind your kids how much you love them. Leave a sticky note for a co-worker telling them to have a spectacular day. Draw a happy face in the snow for a stranger to come across later. Give someone a hug.

Most importantly, consider someone else's happiness from their point of view.
