We are not sure where the tradition of having a winter white sale came from- maybe as a distraction from all the snow some other places have to deal with, as we found out when we moved from the UK to Maine nearly 40 years ago. We had two 24" snow storms within the first week; I cried a lot and the white stuff took forever to melt!
