Kiwanis Club takes the kids fishing
Kiwanis Club members from the Capital District, Division 21, hosted a fun day of fishing and educational activities for underserved children throughout the area. Clubs from Smithfield, Churchland, Suffolk, Portsmouth and Great Bridge participated.
Smithfield Kiwanis Vice President Sherry Vincent took a break from registration to stay cool. Sherry's a State Farm Insurance agent.
Smithfield Kiwanis Club Secretary Beth Supko helped get participants registered at the start of the day.
Smithfield Town Manager Peter Stephenson helped grill hot dogs for lunch. Peter's a Past President of the Smithfield Kiwanis Club and the current Lieutenant Governor of District 21.
Virginia Marine Police were on hand to help teach the kids about safety around the water.
Alan Nogiec, retired Director of Isle of Wight Parks and Recreation and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Smithfield, helped repair rods and reels.
Paul Gates, Secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Chesapeake and Past Lt. Governor of Division 21, helped prepare the rods for fishing.
Wesley Brown, owner of Brown's Automotive in Smithfield and chairman of the Kid Fishing Day Project, met some of the 225 kids who participated in the day.
