"Anything Goes" premieres on PBS Story

"ANYTHING GOES" PREMIERES ON PBS

Zany 1930s comedy comes to life in a sparkling new production

by Rob Lauer

Broadway star Sutton Foster reprises her Tony Award-winning performance as Reno Sweeney in P.G. Wodehouse and Cole Porter's 1930s musical comedy, "Anything Goes" -coming to PBS stations in May.

All aboard for this saucy, sparkling new production of a classic musical comedy and pure escapism. Telling a tale of romance and crime aboard a 1930s luxury liner, this show is everything one could want a big Broadway musical to be-and more!

Tony-winning choreographer Kathleen Marshall directs this London production featuring a joyful, gold-plated score of Cole Porter's most memorable hits, including "You're the Tops," "I Get A Kick Out of You," and the title song "Anything Goes." The filmed production also stars three-time Olivier Award and Tony Award winner Robert Lindsay, Felicity Kendal, and Gary Wilmot.

The plot is a mix of giddy mindless mirth. Aboard a luxury cruise liner during the Great Depression, the aristocracy and the riffraff co-mingle. A Wall Street assistant, Billy, stows away when he discovers his true love, Hope, is to be engaged to an English lord and attempts to disrupt the marriage that only Hope's mother seems to want. Billy must hide from the crew, as well as his boss, who is also on board. Through typical farcical complications, Billy is mistakenly identified as Public Enemy Number One, Snake Eyes Johnson. Once the ship's crew discovers they have no celebrities to promote, they canonize Billy-believing he's the hottest criminal in the country. Unbeknownst to everyone, a seemingly mild-mannered minister traveling aboard the ship actually is a real gangster on the lam from the Feds. Overseeing the chaos is sleek, slick evangelist Reno Sweeney (played by Sutton Foster) and her four scantily clad "angels." Etiquette and convention are tossed overboard as everyone sails on the course to true love, proving that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, some comical disguises, and old-fashioned blackmail.

"Anything Goes" is part of the fifth annual "Broadway's Best" lineup on PBS's "Great Performances," showing at 9:00 p.m. on each Friday night from May 13 through May 27. The spring lineup also includes "Merry Wives," recorded live from The Delacorte Theater; and "Keeping Company with Sondheim," a documentary spotlighting the acclaimed current Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's musical "Company," featuring new interviews with Sondheim, Tony and Grammy winner Katrina Lenk, two-time Tony and two-time Grammy winner Patti LuPone and more.

Throughout its nearly 50-year history on PBS, "Great Performances" has provided an unparalleled showcase of the best in all genres of the performing arts, serving as America's most prestigious and enduring broadcaster of cultural programming. Showcasing a diverse range of artists from around the world, the series has earned 67 Emmy Awards and six Peabody Awards.

"Anything Goes" premieres at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 13, on WHRO, Channel 15.
