Peter and Angie Lowry make home transformation effortless and fun

by Allison T. Williams

Gone are the days of worrying about whether one's new blue sofa - bought under the harsh lights of a chaotic furniture showroom - really will harmonize with one's existing living room décor. There will be no more fruitless searches for a bookshelf to fit in that quirky bedroom corner or for the perfect window treatments to finish off a room.

Peter and Angie Lowry, co-owners of Decorating Den Interiors, effortlessly remove those stressors from the decorating process by taking their interior design services and products directly to clients. The Smithfield couple, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, have transformed living and workspaces in thousands of homes and offices across Hampton Roads.

"We handle all aspects of projects
so our clients can relax
and enjoy the experience.
We work to our clients' specifications
and stay within their budgets."

- Peter Lowry

Decorating Den Interiors is a full-service interior decorating and design company with the experience and skills to bring architecture, space, function, and decor into harmony. Peter and Angie strive to make decorating affordable, convenient and enjoyable for their clients.

"We handle all aspects of projects so our clients can relax and enjoy the experience," Peter says. "We work to our clients' specifications and stay within their budgets."

During the initial complimentary consultation, Peter and Angie assess the project, talk with clients to find out what changes they want in the room, and take measurements of the space. During their next meeting, Angie comes back with drawings, photographs and fabric swatches that showcase features discussed in the original meeting.

"You can't decorate for someone if you don't go into their home and see how they live, what their existing space looks like," Angie explains. "By listening, we get a good idea of what they are looking for. When I come back with a floor plan that includes everything we discussed, clients can give us their feedback. We continue to work through it until we find exactly what they want."

Decorating Den Interiors has direct access to more than 100 nationally-known suppliers who can customize products for their clients.

"Customizing is what we are famous for and I have access to tens of thousands of fabrics," Angie adds, flipping through a book of their most popular upholstery swatches.

Angie, an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers, is an award-winning designer. Over the years, her designs have been showcased in both the Tidewater Builders Association's Homearama as well as the Peninsula Housing and Builders Association's Parade of Homes.

Angie joined an elite group of Decorating Den Interiors' top sellers within the company last year. "Less than two percent of Decorating Den Interiors franchise owners reach this sales level," Peter attests with pride, adding that Angie will be recognized later this year at a corporate event.

Angie and Peter are regulars at the bi-annual Furniture Market Week in High Point, North Carolina- the largest furnishing trade show in the world. By attending trade shows and interior design workshops around the country, the couple has established long-lasting relationships with furniture manufacturers and other product vendors.

Recently they have established a new relationship: decorator Julie Kurchinski has joined their team and will handle new accounts in the Virginia Beach area.

Angie and Peter also serve as regional managers for Decorating Den Interiors. They assist other franchise owners and organize regional educational seminars throughout the year.

Long-time clients say Angie and Peter are a good team. He oversees all major kitchen and bath renovations as well as the construction of customized items. Angie has a flair for decorating and coming up with individualized designs that appeal to her clients.

"I love Angie and Peter
- and I trust and value
Angie's creative opinions
when it comes to my home.
I know what I like, but she knows
how to tie everything together."

- Barbara Rosa

"Angie is so creative with color combinations and mixing styles," satisfied client Harriet Duck insists. "She has a knack for mixing traditional and contemporary materials to produce elegant transformations for the home." The Franklin client has used Peter and Angie for several projects over the past 10 years, the largest being a kitchen renovation that included installing granite countertops, new flooring, new appliances, and painting and updating the hardware on her existing cabinets. The convenience of having the decorators come to her throughout the entire project, even for the ordering of new appliances, made the experience all the more pleasurable, she adds.

Brenda Jackson of Williamsburg contracted with Peter and Angie to redecorate her great room and install plantation shutters on the first floor of her home last spring. With new built-in bookcases, a sectional sofa and chairs, rug and artwork in her great room, Jackson credits the Lowrys with giving her home its fresh, new look.

"They married a lot of my ideas into the final design," she says, adding that she found the Lowry's Decorating Den Interiors franchise while researching on the internet. "They are an amazing couple," she adds,  "and I felt an instant connection to them. They are so personable  and so creative."

Barbara and Pete Rosa of Suffolk have used Angie and Peter's services multiple times since 1999. "Over the years, the Lowrys have done the couple's dining room, mudroom, bathroom, bedroom, and living room. Some of the projects were complete room makeovers; others just freshened up the room with new artwork and accessories.

"She's basically done our entire house," Barbara says, laughing. "We have a lot of years together. I love Angie and Peter â€" and I trust and value Angie's creative opinions when it comes to my home. I know what I like, but she knows how to tie everything together."

Angie and Peter say they are equally appreciative of their clients. Even after 30 years, they thrive on the thrill of their clients' reactions and excitement of having fulfilled their expectations once a project has been completed.

"I feel blessed every time a prospective client calls us," Angie says, with a smile. "We love what we do. Regardless of the size of the job, we feel gratified and privileged to have an opportunity to help people transform their homes."
