Volunteers pitch in for Rebuilding Day

Rebuilding Together Chesapeake recently participated in National Rebuilding Day, a day in which hundreds of Rebuilding Together chapters across the country rehabilitated thousands of homes of low-income seniors and people with disabilities.

The Rebuilding Together Chesapeake chapter took on the project to rehabilitate the home of a 42-year-old man by the name of David Martin, a Chesapeake resident with Spina Bifida. In one day's time, volunteers replaced all of David's bathroom fixtures, making the toilet and shower more easily accessible, and built a 120-foot pathway from David's driveway to his house. Before this pathway was constructed, David was wheeling himself through the grass that entire distance, which was not only hard on him, but also on the grass and his wheelchair!

Member volunteer Kelly Gish and Executive Director Grace Bitgood dug the pathway for the new sidewalk leading to David's house.

David Martin put in the first paver to create the 120-foot pathway from the driveway to his house.
