Portsmouth Sports Club
President Jim Short welcomed members to the August meeting at Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club. A special presentation was made to Portsmouth City TreasurerJimmy Williams thanking him for his many years of service on the club's board. Jimmy was very influential in providing sponsorships to the club's various special events and procuring quality guests for the annual jamboree.
Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Director Eddie Webb introduced guest speaker WVEC-TV Sports Director Scott Cash. Scott gave a lighthearted talk about his 28 years of covering sports events in Hampton Roads. He recounted anecdotes about his numerous interviews of sports celebrities especially golfer Curtis Strange and Old Dominion Coach Bobby Wilder. Scott explained how much sports reporting has changed since his first days in broadcasting in his native Philadelphia. He particularly noticed the drastic ways that digital footage has changed his industry. He answered many questions from the members, including his thoughts on the Redskins debate and a possible new stadium for ODU.
The club is gearing up for its annual fundraiser, the reverse raffle to be held at Ambassador Club in November.
